Англия под игом иностранных королей.
Захватчики, известные как викинги, или датчане, снова и снова возвращались и нападали на Англию. Это не было изначально решено, и англичане только платили дань. В девятом же веке они завоевали и обосновались на крайнем севере и западе Шотландии, а также некоторых прибрежных районах Ирландии. Они владели английской короны в течение двадцати четырех лет. Три датских короля, один за другим, правили Англией, один из них, Кнуд, был в то же время королем Англии, Дании, Норвегии и Швеции. Правление датских королей над Англией закончилось вскоре после смерти Кнуда в 1035.
Теперь же норманны начали нападать берега Англии из Нормандии (Франции). В 1066 захватческая армия норманнов одержал победу в битве при Гастингсе, в результате этого одного сражения Уильям, герцог Нормандии, был коронован королем Англии и стал известен в популярной истории как Вильгельм Завоеватель. В отличие от Германского нашествия, вторжения Норман был невеликим. Норманны не селились в специальных областях урегулирования. Им дали в собственность землю и людей, живущих на ней. Была введена феодальная система, где лордами и баронами были норманны, и крестьянами были саксы. Захватчики говорили по-французски, и это был языком высших классов и правительства, английский был языком низших классов.
