Firstly, there are 9 faculties, to be more precise, 7 faculties and 2 institutes. Secondly, there are departments of two types. On the one hand, all the faculties have a full-time department and some of them have a correspondence department. The University course lasts five years. In order to enter the University young people take entrance or Unified National Exams. Twice a year the students take terminal exams, in winter and in summer. As many as 5000 students attend lectures, seminars and classes or tutorials, do labs and course papers at all the departments during the year. There are four University buildings located in different parts of Kaluga. The University trains teachers, psychologists, social workers, researchers, post-graduates, and other specialists who can be useful in different areas of life.

Free time(day off).

Most people in our country work five days a week but students and pupils work six days. They have only one day off. It is Sunday.
I like this day very much. You needn't hurry anywhere and you may go wherever you like after your week's work. On this day I wake up later than usual. But sometimes I don't get up till nine or ten o'clock. As soon as I get up I air the room, make my bed and do morning exercises. Then I have breakfast, clear away the dishes and wash up. Two more hours for getting ready with my homework, and I am free. I meet my friends and we discuss our plans together. We may go to the cinema or theatre, to museums and parks. In fine weather we also like to be out of town. We find a nice place somewhere in the forest or on the bank of the river. We lie in the sun, play different games and swim. In winter my friends and I often go to the skating-rink. Skating is my favourite kind of sport, but I like to ski too. In the evening all the members of our family get together. We have our supper, make plans for tomorrow, watch TV or read books. Reading is my hobby. I enjoy my days off very much.

Russia.

Russia is the largest country in the world. It covers half of Europe and a third of Asia. It borders on different countries. Russia is located on two plains. They are: the Great Russian Plain and the West Siberian Plain. On the vast territory of Russia there are 4 climatic zones. They are the arctic, the subarctic, the temperate and the subtropical zones. The arctic and the subarctic zones have the coldest climate. The subtropical zone is the warmest. We live in the temperate zone. The climate is moderate. Russia is rich in natural resources. It has large reserves of oil, natural gas, copper, lead and other minerals. There are a lot of holidays in Russia. The year begins with the New Year. Usually people begin to celebrate it in the evening of the 31st of December. Before the holiday we decorate the New Year Tree and children write letters to Father Frost. The next holiday is celebrated on the 23rd of February. It is the Day of the Defender of Motherland. On this day women congratulate men and give them small presents. In March we have the International Women’s Day. It is celebrated on the 8th of March. On this day men present small gifts to their mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, etc. On the 1st and the 2nd of May we have the Holiday of Spring and Labour. Formerly people had demonstrations on this day. The next great holiday in our country is the 9th of May. It is called Victory Day. In 1945 Soviet Army de-feated German fascists. This holiday is widely celebrated in our country. Russians are open-hearted, good-wishers, friendly and family-oriented. The Russians are very sympathetic. Most of us will give money to beggars. Another national feature of the Russians is optimism, and belief in a happy future. Friendship has a special meaning in Russian culture. There is a saying in Russia: “Don’t have a hundred of rubles, but have a hundred of friends.”

Mikhail Lomonosov.

Mikhail Lomonosov was born in 1711 in Archangelsk province. His father was a fisher and young Mikhail liked to help him. He always strove for knowledge and liked reading books.

As he was 19 years old, he decided to study in Moscow. He went there on foot. In Moscow he entered the Slavic- Greek-Latin Academy. After his graduation from Academy he was sent abroad to complete his knowledge in chemistry. After he had returned from abroad, he became the first Russian professor of chemistry in 1745. Mass media.

Mass Media has become an important part of our life. People can learn about what is happening in the world very fast using mass media. The mass media include newspapers, magazines, radio and television. The earliest kind of mass media was newspaper. What newspapers and magazines do I prefer to read? I like to read the following newspapers: «Komsomolskaya Pravda», («KomsomolTruth»), «Argumenty i Fakty» («Arguments and Facts»).As far as newspapers are concerned they may be daily, or weekly. Magazines may be weekly, monthly and quarterly. Newspapers can cover much more events and news. I like the way they present different points of view, approaches to the problems. They also touch upon cultural, sport news. Magazines do not focus on daily, rapidly changing events. My parents and I buy some of newspapers and magazines in a kiosk.

Great Britain.

Great Britain has a very good geographical position as it lies on the crossways of the sea routes from Europe to other parts of the world. The sea connects Great Britain with most European countries. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The climate of the British Isles is not very cold in winter and never very hot in summer. It often rains in Great Britain in all seasons. Great Britain has a highly developed industry. It is rich in coal, iron and other metals. At the head of the state there is the Queen but in practice state power is in the hands of the Parliament. There are fewer public holidays in Great Britain than in other European countries. The most favorite holiday is Christmas. Traditionally this is the day when people decorate their trees. Christmas is a family holiday. All the family usually meet for the big Christmas dinner of turkey and Christmas pudding. And everyone gives and receives presents. The 26th of December, Boxing Day, is an extra holiday after Christmas. Its the time to visit friends and relatives. Another popular British tradition is Halloween, celebrated on October, 31, the eve of All Saints’ Day. Now most people do not believe in evil spirits. Today the day is usually marked by costume balls or fancy-dress parties and is a popular tradition with young people and children.

Cities of Russia.

Russia is a big, rich and interesting country. It is heart is the capital Moscow. The heart of Moscow is the Kremlin. One of the most remarkable structures of the 16th century – Ivan the Great Bell Tower rises in the centre of the Kremlin. On the stone pedestal at the foot of the Bell Tower there is a Tsar-Bell – the largest in the world. Not far from it one can see a Tsar-Cannon. There are 20 towers in the Kremlin. On the five tops one can see shining ruby stars. The clock that strikes every quarter of an hour is on the Spassky Tower. The square near the Kremlin is Red Square, the central and the most beautiful one in Moscow. There is Lenin Mausoleum near the Kremlin wall in Red Square which is considered to be some kind of the museum. Kaluga was founded in 1371. Kaluga is one of the oldest Russian cities. It stands on the banks of the Oka River. In different parts of the city we can see old churches and cathedrals. The oldest of them are church of the 17th century “of Cover on the Ditch” and the Cathedral of St. George “past the hill”. The Stone Bridge across the Berezuyevsky Ravine was built in 1780 in honour of Katherine II’s visit to Kaluga. There are only a few bridges of such design in Europe. Now Kaluga is an important industrial centre. Kaluga is also a cultural centre. Citizens like visiting our Drama theatre which is more than 230 years old. Day after day Kaluga is growing. Now let’s speak about St. Petersburg. This city is very beautiful. You can visit Petergov Hermitage St.Isaks cathedral or you can just walk along a bank of the Neva there.
