Quotations

Grammar focus: the Oblique moods

Material: Worksheet A

Dynamic: whole class

Time: 20 min.

Procedure:

1. Cut up the worksheet or make your own.

2. Have each student pick one strip of paper with a quotation on it.

3. Ask the students to read their quotations aloud, one by one, interpret them, agree or disagree and give their reason.

4. Have the rest of the students express their opinions as to the quotations read.

 

Rules of life and laws of nature

Grammar focus: Zero Conditional

Material: Worksheet B

Dynamic: whole class

Time: 10 min.

Procedure:

1. Give one copy of Worksheet B to each student. Tell them that on the copies they have the subordinate clauses of conditional sentences (zero type). Give the students a little time to look through the clauses and fill in the gaps with the correct form of the verb.

2. Read the main clauses given below one by one and the students should complete the sentences with the subordinate clauses saying aloud the full version of the conditional sentence.

3. Discuss the form of the verb in Zero Conditional

wood doesn’t burn.

it floats.

it boils.

you get pink.

people tend to be in their present jobs.

the alarm goes off.

it rusts.

it melts.

the production line automatically stops.

I never use my cell phone.

your account is automatically blocked.

it takes me twenty minutes to get to work.

water turns into ice.

you feel tired.

we contact the supplier right away.

you sometimes see a rainbow.

it floats.

he is eliminated from the competition.

 

Chain conditionals (type 1)

Grammar focus: Conditional 1

Material: none

Dynamic: whole class

Time: 10 min.

Procedure:

1. Begin with a sentence, for example: “If I feel like going out today, I’ll go to the nearest amusement park”.

2. Ask one of your students to use the end of your sentence to begin his/her own one, for example: “If I go to the nearest amusement park, I’ll go on the rides”. The next person can say: “If I go on the rides, I’ll experience a mixed feeling of joy and horror”, etc.

3. Continue until the last student in your group makes his/her sentence.

 

Superstitions

Grammar focus: Conditional 1

Material: Worksheet C

Dynamic: whole class

Time: 30 min.

Procedure:

1. Cut up the worksheet or make your own.

2. Give each student half of a superstition.

3. Have students circulate and find the missing parts of their superstitions.

4. Ask them to sit down when they feel they have a match.

5. Consider the superstitions together talking about their meaning and form.

6. Ask the students to provide some more examples of superstitions if they know any, then discuss them altogether.

 

If I were you

Grammar focus: Conditional 2

Material: none

Dynamic: whole class

Time: 25 min.

Procedure:

1. Choose one student and tell him/her to leave the room.

2. The rest of the student should think of a noun and of some clues which will help to guess the word. For example:

the noun: bookworm

clues: If I were you, all booksellers would be happy to see me.

If I were you, I would be a frequenter of all local libraries.

If I were you, I would spend days and nights reading.

the noun: ketchup

clues: If I were you, I would be of red colour.

If I were you, I would be added to hotdogs.

If I were you, I would contain a lot of tomatoes in me.

3. Invite the student to the room and have him/her guess the noun. He/she may ask questions if they are in the form of the untrue present.

4. Time permitting, you may repeat the procedure as many times as you want.
