The Secret Garden

‘The Secret Garden’ is a well-written, fascinating book set in Yorkshire. It tells the story of Mary Lennox, a lonely and unwanted child, who arrives from India to live in Yorkshire with her only relative, her uncle, after she becomes an orphan. This children’s classic was written by Frances Hodgson Burnett in 1911. The book realistically brings out the child’s suffering and innocence.

Mary Lennox is left to amuse herself. She has nothing to do apart from exploring the huge, gloomy house that belongs to her weird uncle, and the surrounding area. One day, the ten-year-old girl discovers a door which is well-hidden behind an ivy-covered wall. The door leads to a secret garden. For the first time in her short, miserable life, she finds something to care for and she is determined to restore the garden to its former glory.

The plot becomes even more complicated when Mary discovers that there is another child living in the house – her sickly cousin Colin. Mary also makes friends with Dickon, the twelve-year-old brother of one of the servants.

‘The Secret Garden’ involves several main and minor characters, all having distinctive personalities and inner feelings. Some characters use the Yorkshire dialect. This helps to realistically bring out the setting of the book. There are both children and adults in the book, in order to present the reader with the differences between the two points of view.

The plot is fast-moving, reflecting Mary’s energy and enthusiasm. Frances Hodgson Burnett sensitively portrays the world through the eyes of a child. Mary’s world is full of animals, plants and birds.

‘The Secret Garden’ is one of the most-loved and read children’s classics and is hugely popular with both children and adults. ‘The Secret Garden’ is well-worth reading because it brings out the wonders of nature and the beauty of life despite the problems one has to face.
