Tour Types

1. There are essentially three types of prearranged package tours.

Independent Tour. As the name suggests, the traveller is able to be independent of a group, but still part of a tour! Travelers can determine departure and return dates as well as budgetary constraints to their liking. The purpose of the independent tour is to enable travelers to obtain all the benefits of volume discounts and prearranged, guaranteed rates without sacrificing independence and flexibility. Independent tours vary in flexibility and complexity. Some tours allow the traveller to choose accommodations at different hotels listed in the brochure at different prices. Some tours provide car rentals, which increase flexibility for the traveler.

2. Hosted Tour. A hosted tour is slightly different from an independent tour because it provides more scheduling opportunities for the traveller and a host who is available at each major tour destination to assist the traveller in planning activities and sightseeing excursions. The host, who is typically a representative of the tour or a ground operator, is found at desks in the lobbies of all hotels featured in the tour. Travelers rely on the services and events offered by the host to enhance their vacation. The host can arrange for sightseeing trips from the hotel, purchase tickets for events, and offer a variety of tour arrangements for each day. Similar to an independent tour, the hosted tour generally allows the traveller to arrive and leave when it is convenient and to choose from a variety of hotels. The difference between the two types of tours is in the availability of tours and services at the destination. The hosted tour has scheduled activities to choose from, whereas an independent tour does not.

3. Escorted Tour. The escorted tour is the type of tour that generally comes to mind when a tour is mentioned. The escorted tour is a structured program of sightseeing, meals, transportation, and accommodations. The travellers are responsible for getting themselves to the starting city on time, after which they can relax and enjoy the trip. The escorted tour consists of a group of people who travel together for the entire trip. A bus is usually the mode of travel, and a professional escort is with the group at all times. The escort is responsible for the safety and enjoyment of the travellers and makes sure the tour operates smoothly. Although the escort is usually well prepared to describe the sights of the area to the travellers, local guides are frequently used. Many people especially enjoy the escorted tour because it is a relaxing vacation. The tour is completely arranged; the escort is always there to make sure everything is running smoothly; and there are no hassles with hotel check-ins, luggage, border crossings, meals, and ticket purchasing because someone else does it. Modern-day buses with air conditioning, quiet motors, plenty of leg room, and smooth rides provide a comfortable setting for the traveller going from one location to another. Additionally, as tours are usually tested many times to assure that the mileage can be comfortably travelled, escorted tours are more efficient.

4. The differences among the escorted tour, the hosted tour, and the independent tour are primarily a matter of scheduling and availability of guides or escorts along the way. Travellers must decide how much effort they want to put into the planning and travelling stages of the trip. The escorted tour does it all; the hosted tour helps with some of the planning; and the independent tour gets the traveller to the site but leaves the rest of the planning to the traveller.
