Types of Accommodations.

1. The types of accommodations available to the public are generally known as motels, hotels, resorts, convention hotels, bed & breakfast, hostels, and even campgrounds. Each type of accommodation has something different to offer the guest.

2. A hotel is a place that provides lodging and food for travellers. Hotel can be classified by room rate, purpose of guest stay, or length of stay.

3. Classification by room rate includes economy \ budget, moderate or mid-scale, upscale and luxury.

4. The purpose of the guest stay is a classification that includes pleasure\resort, business, or conference. Length of stay classification is either transient or resident.

5. There are numerous types of rooms and service available at hotels and motels. Most budget motels do not have food service available on site. The motel provides what is needed for a restful stay but does not supply many amenities. Mid-scale motels have restaurant facilities, may have swimming pools and lounges. A motel refers to a lodging property that has free parking available to travellers. Most motels have doors to the parking lot from each room. Compared to a motel, a hotel is usually more extensive in services, larger, and likely to offer something special like convention facilities or a resort component. Upscale hotels are more service oriented, providing room service, bell persons, and gift shops or minimalls on the property. Luxury hotels provide everything a guest might want in addition to services not normally provided by other hotels.

6. Luxury hotels are the highest priced and usually are located in a prestigious spot in the city or countryside.

7. A resort hotel is one that people visit for relaxation, recreation, or entertainment.

8. A convention hotel caters to large groups, usually in the downtown area of major cities, and can accommodate as many as 5,000 guests.

9. Resort hotels, or destination resorts, have been around since the early health spas and mountain resorts of ancient times, because even then people needed to escape the cities, summer heat, or winter blues. Resort hotels offer many types of recreation opportunities, such as golf, tennis and swimming. Winter resorts add skiing, snowmobiling, sleigh rides, and snow boarding.

10. Convention hotels are turning into high-tech conference areas with media centers that house audio and video recording capabilities along with the usual audiovisual equipment of slide projectors, overhead projectors, and flip charts. Convention hotels operate in a very competitive climate, and, therefore, any high-tech options available for the convention market will secure future conventions.

11. Bed&breakfast (B&B) inns can be found in every state and province and often in large cities. The B&B industry has increased because of the high cost of foreign travel, the desire to be in a home away from home, and the need to escape the city and familiar motels. B&Bs are restored older homes in rural settings, scenic waterfront estates, cozy Gothic cottages, train stations, converted schoolhouses, old mills, plantations, and even castlelike structures. Staying in a B&B allows the traveller to experience the daily life of the local people.
