Сант Килда – отдаленный остров в группе Гебридских островов. Известно, что население острова являлось уникальной общиной, почти изолированной от остального мира. Образ жизни общины оставался неизменным на протяжении нескольких веков. Население острова стало резко сокращаться в 1920-е годы, когда молодежь стала переезжать в полные жизни крупные промышленные центры Шотландии. Молодые люди покидали свои родные места в поисках работы. Их также привлекали коммунальные удобства и комфорт больших городов.
