GRAMMAR COMMENT: Discourse markers: adverbs and adverbial expressions[1, p.145].

Discourse markers: adverbs and adverbial expressions are used in the speech with different functions: to change the direction of conversation, to introduce an additional surprising information, to generalize idea, to return to the main topic after a digression and so on. These are: taking off, by the way, incidentally, actually, in fact, as a matter of fact, in any case, anyway, at least, as I was saying, on the whole, all in all, after all, besides, basically, obviously, I mean, in other words, otherwise, as far as, as regards, regarding, that is to say, on the one hand, on the other hand [1].

Exercise 1. Read and translate the sentences, paying attention to the means denoting: additions, comparison, contrast, subordination, reason and result [1].

Exercise 2. Define the functions of discourse markers: adverbs and adverbial expressions in the following situations:

B. No, I didn’t. Actually/ in fact/ as a matter of fact I don’t’ really like football.

3. As I was saying, if Mark gets the job we’ll have to reorganize the department.

4. On the whole, I think that women make better journalists than men.

5. I think we should buy them. After all, we’ll never find them anywhere cheaper than this.

Exercise 3. Listen to the text [Part III, pp. 156; 1, T.1.18 p.122 ] about a research of a Family Tree. Do you know anything about your Family tree?

Exercise 4. Answer the questions on the listened text.
