GRAMMAR COMMENT: Direct and reported speech[1, p 196]

Grammatical changes Some features of grammar in direct speech must be changed in reported speech. · When we report what someone said, we tend to change the verb tense, which is called 'backshift'. Personal pronouns, demonstratives and other references to the ‘hегеand now' may also need to be changed. 'I've seen a bank clerk wearing a nose ring.' She said that shed seen a bank clerk wearing a nose ring. · Most modal verbs do not usually change, but can changes to could and will changes to would. 'You must dress professionally at all times'He told us we must dress professionally at all times. · When something is reported that is a general truth, or if the situation hasn't changed yet, there is often no tense change. She said that darker coloured clothes generally look smarter. My neighbour's 4-year-old told me she wants to be a dress designer when she grows up. · In reported questions, the subject usually comes before the verb and the auxiliaries do, does and did are only used in negative reported questions. Yes / No questions are reported with if or whether. Question marks are not used in reported questions. 'Which suit do you prefer?'She asked (me) which suit I preferred.
