A beautiful animated film to help students the world over better understand American history, this exciting and ambitious musical adventure combines historical fact with popular folklore and legend. Watch the film and note the instances where the film’s authors take liberties with historical fact. Do you think it matters?

HAND-OUT №134 Discipline: English as a foreign language Credits:2 Advanced LevelPractical lesson Lexical theme: Gender Issues in America Grammar: The grammar of phrasal verbs Assistant professor Akbalaeva Zh.K.

Warm up

Explain the following proverbs:

There is a woman behind every successful man.
Taste is gone with the mother; education is gone with the father; everything is gone with the wife. (means when they die)

GRAMMAR COMMENT: The grammar of phrasal verbs.

Phrasal verbs vary grammatically. The most important considerations are a) whether the verb is transitive or intransitive; b) whether the particle is transitive or intransitive. Shut up! How did this situation come about?(intransitive verb + adverbial particle). We’d better look into this more carefully. (intransitive verb +prepositional particle.) Transitive verb + adverbial particle: I think we’ve left everyone behind. Transitive verb + prepositional particle: Don’t worry: I won’t holdit against you.

Exercise 1. Match these phrasal verbs containing the names of animals to the definitions:

Monkey around to talk a lot

Rabbit on to behave in a silly way

Pig out to work hard

Weasel out of sth to eat a lot

Beaver away to avoid doing sth
