GRAMMAR COMMENT: The grammar of phrasal verbs.
| Phrasal verbs vary grammatically. The most important considerations are a) whether the verb is transitive or intransitive; b) whether the particle is transitive or intransitive. Shut up! How did this situation come about?(intransitive verb + adverbial particle). We’d better look into this more carefully. (intransitive verb +prepositional particle.) Transitive verb + adverbial particle: I think we’ve left everyone behind. Transitive verb + prepositional particle: Don’t worry: I won’t holdit against you. |
