Japanese Business Etiquette. Greetings and Introductions

The toughest and most complicated challenge comes at the very beginning of the meeting. Bowing is extremely important in Japan, however, your hosts realize that Westerners are unaccustomed to bowing and may offer you a handshake instead.

If you wish to return a bow, do so with your back straight and your hands at the sides. The longer and deeper the bow, the more respect that is shown. Bows are often repeated over and over, getting slightly less formal with each iteration. Sometimes a bow and a handshake are combined; if this happens, turn slightly to the left to avoid bumping heads.Although the few minutes immediately following formal introductions can be a time for nerves to set in, avoid putting your hands into your pockets; doing so shows boredom or lack of interest.

GRAMMAR COMMENTS: Modal verbs in reporting [1.p 156]

We sometimes use a modal verb in a report when there is no modal verb in the original. The verbs could, would, might, needn’t, ought to, used to, could have , should have etc. don’t change in the report. Will usually changes to would, can to could, may to might. However, if the situation we are reporting still exists or is still in the future and the verb in the reporting clause has a present tense, we use will, can, may in the reported clause. When shall is used in the original to talk about the future, we use would in the report. When must is used in the original to say that it is necessary to do something, we can usually use either must or had to in the report, although had to is more natural in speech.
